“Time Heist” is Peter Capaldi’s fifth episode in as the new Doctor. His run of episodes is definitely getting better, but I still feel as if something is missing from this season. It just doesn’t seem as much fun as the previous seasons. And I don’t know why. As I mentioned previously, maybe it’s just time to change up companions. Maybe mix up the chemistry a bit with some new blood.
As for “Time Heist,” it definitely was the strongest and most inventive of the new batch of episodes thus far. The Doctor, Clara, and two others are recruited by an unknown person to break into the Universes most secure bank vault. Not helping matters is that they all had their short-term memories erased prior to the job so they don’t really know why they’re there or why they agreed to the bank heist to begin with.
Overall, I did have more fun with this episode than previous ones. And it did keep my attention throughout. But I do wish the ending had been less convoluted and tied to something grander in scale. I really wanted a ‘wow, I didn’t see that coming’ moment. Maybe some people came away with that feeling. I didn’t.
But I can’t help ask myself, “isn’t he supposed to be out looking for the Time Lords?” They did set that up last series, correct?
Here is episode 5 of “Doctor Who” extra, followed by two previews for next week’s episode “The Caretaker.”
