“Quantum Leap” is about to make a comeback. NBC has commissioned a new pilot to be produced. Whether the show’s original star, Scott Bakula, is to be involved is yet to be confirmed. I loved the original series ALOT, so all I can say is that it would be a HUGE mistake not to have his involvement in this project. At the very least, just to wrap up his original storyline while a new person does the leaping. How fun would it be if he was now the holographic observer?
Anyhow, as much as I would love to continue to talk about the show for the next twenty paragraphs, I’m here to talk about one of the coolest prop replicas that you can own from the show. The folks over at the website replicaprops.com have made a working Gummi Bear handlink that was used in the later seasons of the show.
The earlier seasons used a couple of calculator-type handlinks before it switched over to the Gummi Bear look. The Gummi Bear was always my favorite. As a matter of fact, they modeled the ‘future’ look of the show on the Gummi Bear design.
The main purpose of the handlink, of course, was for Al (Sam’s holographic partner, played by the late, great Dean Stockwell) to use it to look up and to convey important information from Ziggy, the shows super hybrid computer, and give to Sam so that he could complete his missions.
Anyhow, I got ahold of one of these handlinks and made a little video highlighting its coolness. But I have to tell you, it’s not just for the casual “Quantum Leap” fan, only because it’s a bit expensive. Like, okay, really expensive. As of this writing, it goes for $650.00 dollars. Oh boy! Nothing to sneeze at. Or maybe sneeze if that helps. I believe that because the handlink is expensive and time consuming to produce it just comes with a hefty price tag.
I noticed that Replica Props are also working on the calculator-style handlink as well. So keep an eye out for that one if you prefer that version instead.
