Batman: The Animated Series was first broadcast on Fox from September 1992 to September 1995. It was the first entry in what would turn into a new DC shared continuity universe. And it also surprisingly took on a much more adult tone. It was a show where both kids and adults could enjoy alike.
This wasn’t the goofy cartoony Batman. This was a much darker, serious Batman. He was portrayed in the same vein as the Batman in the Tim Burton films that preceded it. And this new adult tone set the stage for a whole new breed of animated shows that were aimed at a much broader (and older) audience. I found this style to be very refreshing and extremely entertaining.
What I’m presenting here is the full storyboard packet for one of the episodes from Batman: The Animated Series (“The Underdwellers), along with the writer’s guide for the series and a script for another one of the episodes (“Joker’s Wild”). So if you’re interested in writing or storyboarding for an animated show, you may find all of this interesting. Or maybe you’re just a simply a Batman fan. Either way – atomic batteries to power, turbines to speed… oh wait, wrong Batman.
The Underdwellers (aired Oct. 21, 1992) – “Batman stumbles onto a gang of runaways led by an adult madman who treats them less than human, but thinks he is doing right.”

Joker’s Wild (aired Nov. 19, 1992) – “When a billionaire builds a casino called the Joker’s Wild, the Joker breaks out of Arkham Asylum to destroy it.”
