Adapted from the 1975 Broadway musical, “The Wiz,” a retelling of L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” featured an all African-American cast starring the likes of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Richard Pryor, Lena Horne, Nipsey Russell, Mabel King, Ted Ross, Thelma Carpenter, and Therese Merritt. It was directed by Sidney Lumet with a screenplay by Joel Schumacher and was released theatrically in 1978.
The film was a critical and financial failure at the box office. Some blame the fact that Diana Ross was too old to play the role, others blame Schumacher’s screenplay, and some claim that the Broadway musical just wasn’t adaptable for the big screen. But the film did receive four Academy Award nominations and Michael Jackson’s performance as the Scarecrow received many acclamations.
