Welcome to a new section I like to call “Movies I’d like to see from TV shows.” In the past, there have been a few television shows that have spun off to the big screen keeping their casts intact (“Star Trek”, “Firefly”, “Veronica Mars” for example) and some that have been remade completely with new casts (“A-Team” “21 Jump Street” “The Fugitive”).
But what about the movies we’d like to see from our favorite TV shows? What would they end up looking like on the big screen? So it got me to thinking… what if I took a small slice of that and simply sampled it? And the tiny slice in this case would be the movie trailer. And to a smaller extent the movie poster. What could these movies look like if they ever came to fruition?
So once again, I turned a ‘what if’ into a ‘why not.’ Only this time, it was no small undertaking. It became quite time consuming, hence the lack of postings over the last couple of weeks. If I do turn this into a regular feature, due to time constraints, I can’t imagine it being more than a few times a year. But I thought it would be a fun feature all the same.
And our lucky winner first time out is the NBC show “Community” for which I happen to be a fan. It a comedy about a dysfunctionally diverse group of people attending a community college. In one episode of the show, the character of Abed shouted out the line “six seasons a movie” referring to another show that was on NBC at the time (“The Cape” which has since been cancelled). But that line really took off with fans who wanted to see their beloved “Community” actually fulfill Abed’s prophecy. So, of course, I thought it was the perfect show to begin this fun little feature.
As of this writing, “Community” just finished up it’s fifth season this past week and NBC has yet to announce whether or not it returns for a sixth season. And if it does hopefully get renewed, then maybe Abed’s wishful words will actually be realized for his own show, since “The Cape” only made it to “one season and a cancellation.”
In any case, below is a sampling of what a “Community” feature film might actually look like. Feel free to offer suggestions for movies you’d like to see from TV shows and maybe I can serve up a small slice of that.
So I now present to you… “Community: The Movie.”
