First off, this is a tad racy so if you are easily offended, avoid this article and click HERE for fuzzy feelings.
And with that said, from the look of these pictures, it seems as though someone has a full-on spider chubby. Shame on you, Spider-man. You have both Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane to handle these types of things.
But the facts of the story are this: An artist by the name of Eunsuk Yoo created this sculpture and hung it (pun intended) from the Lotte Shopping Center in Busan, South Korea. And for some crazy reason, for which he explains below, he chose to give Spider-man a boner.
So the main problem here is this: The sculpture was erected (pun intended) over the shopping mall’s playground and rest area. The kids are looking up and seeing Spider-man’s, um… web-slinger.
Yoo was given the choice to make slight alterations to the sculpture or take it down. He chose the latter. On his Facebook Page, he explains why (though you might need a translator.)
“I am the artist who made this piece. My reason for it was that I wanted apply the natural physical phenomenon to a superhero depict what’s natural in the morning without lies and superficial-ness in a comical way.
There have been some comments on various community sites and Facebook pages that this is lewd and a disgrace to the source material. Lotte Shopping Center has received many complaint calls this morning from a certain organization, and after their meeting, it was decided that I have to either modify or take the statue down. Instead of modifying my work, I’ve decided to take it down.
It was ok for about a year and now it has to be taken down due a sudden interest in the piece, which is sad. But I understand that a piece that could be potentially interpreted as lewd can be offensive at a place like shopping mall. It’s disappointing, but I’ll reach out to the public with a better work next time.”
I love all types of humor, from childish to thought provoking. But the humor factor isn’t the problem here. Yoo shouldn’t have hung the thing (pun intended) in a place where small children congregate. He was only asking for trouble. And the last thing I would want is a bunch of angry parents after me. Then again, maybe he was just looking for the kind of attention that he is now getting. People are talking. But it might have been best if he had just implied it, as in the pic below.
Either way, it got me thinking. If Yoo was to tackle other Marvel characters, what would they look like?
