“Star Trek: The Animated Series” Script & Storyboards for ‘The Time Trap’

Star Trek The Animated SeriesFour years after the end of the Original Star Trek Series (1966-69), Paramount commissioned “Star Trek: The Animated Series (1973-74) to run Saturday mornings on NBC, with the first episode debuting September 8, 1973.

Even though the show was relegated to this kid’s time zone, the show was anything but childish. It actually did a very good job in terms of keeping the episodes interesting and relevant for the times and never stooped down to cater to its new format’s demographic. And, unfortunately, because of this approach, it may have contributed to its early cancellation. The show lasted only two seasons. There were sixteen episodes produced during its first season and only six episodes during its second.

Star Trek Animated Series CastMost of the original cast returned to voice their counterparts (William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, George Takei, Nichelle Nichols, James Doohan, and Majel Barrett). Unfortunately, due to budget constraints, Walter Koenig was left out of the mix (along with his character of Pavel Chekov). But to throw some good will his way, he was hired to write an episode of the series entitled “The Infinite Vulcan.”

This show really did feel like a fourth season to the original series. But in terms of canon, there has been a bit of back and forth concerning that issue. There was a time when Paramount said it wasn’t, but over the years that view has seemed to change, especially since there have been various references to the animated series in some of the “Star Trek” spin-offs.
